Abstract: This study examines transportation issues in Narayanganj City Corporation, one of the densely populated cities in Bangladesh. It examines the Chashara intersection which is a major intersection within the city, suffers from ever worsening traffic and poor infrastructure. Using qualitative research methods, information was obtained through field surveys, observation as well as four focus group discussions with residents aged 20-50 years mainly students, urban dwellers experts. Some of the problems that emerged from the study include poor traffic control, limited road construction and maintenance. The findings also highlight significant challenges, including poor traffic management, insufficient road networks, and inefficient regulation of transport services, notably the prevalence of auto-rickshaws contributing to the congestion. The study identifies the Chashara intersection as a critical area requiring urgent intervention. Proposed solutions emphasize the introduction of alternative routes to alleviate bottlenecks, stricter regulation of auto-rickshaw operations, and the implementation of congestion pricing mechanisms to manage traffic flow. These recommendations aim to provide a strategic framework for improving urban mobility and ensuring sustainable development in the transportation sector of Narayanganj. The need for immediate, coordinated efforts from local authorities and urban planners is underscored, as addressing these issues is essential for enhancing the city’s livability and accommodating future growth.

Abstract: To assist researchers in solving challenging structural mechanics engineering problems, finite element modeling (FEM) has grown to be a very popular technique. The several layers of various materials that make up a pavement's complicated structure and affect how it responds to stress have an impact on how it behaves. In this study, finite element analysis is done on a real existing road which is named Nowhata-Chowmasia road, situated in Rajshahi, Bangladesh. FEM is used to study this flexible pavement, which consists of 7 layers (surface, binder, base type-1, base type-2, sub-base, enhanced subgrade, and subgrade). The effect of the depth of the base layer on vertical stresses and displacements is examined using the ABAQUS/CAE 2017 modeling and simulation program. The base layer of the real existing road is 150 mm provided by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The analysis is done by measuring stress and displacement under wheel load by decreasing the base layer thickness to 100 mm and further increasing it to 200 mm. The modeling approach assumes that all materials function in a linear elastic manner. The Poisson's ratio, layer thickness, and material elastic modulus are the major inputs used in the modeling procedure. In this work, flexible pavement is simulated using a conventional axle load of 100 kN, which corresponds to a single four-wheeled axle. Finally, FEM analysis showed that the maximum stresses are 0.35 MPa, 0.27 MPa, and 0.21 MPa and maximum displacements are 0.52 mm, 0.34 mm, and 0.21 mm for 100 mm, 150 mm, and 200 mm base layer thickness respectively. So, for the increase of base layer thickness the stress and displacement are decreased.

Abstract: This paper explores the feasibility and effectiveness of using the Fengyun-3 meteorological satellite to monitor sea ice, providing services for ships navigating in polar regions. Firstly, it analyzes the impact of Arctic sea ice changes on ship navigation and the importance of sea ice monitoring in route planning. Next, it provides a detailed introduction to the data sources and processing methods of the Fengyun-3 satellite, including radiometric calibration, geometric correction, image registration, and cropping. Subsequently, it discusses the characteristics of sea ice in the visible spectrum and successfully extracts sea ice information using MERSI-II data with land, cloud, and seawater masking techniques. The study indicates that the comprehensive use of multi-spectral data and other observation methods can significantly enhance sea ice monitoring capabilities. In the future, integrating more advanced technologies is expected to achieve refined identification and short-term prediction of sea ice movement, thereby providing more scientific and efficient support for ships navigating in polar regions, enhancing navigation safety and efficiency, and offering a scientific basis for the development of Arctic shipping routes.

Abstract: The granular sub-ballast in conventional ballasted trackbed structure, though cheap and easy to construct, requires frequent maintenance, and cannot protect the subgrade against water infiltration. However, asphaltic sub-ballast in asphalt-ballast trackbed can reduce stress on the subgrade and provide a waterproofing layer against water infiltration. Asphalt binder is however, susceptible to temperature fluctuations. The aim of this study therefore is to investigate whether the addition of crumb rubber to asphalt binder could reduce the susceptibility of asphalt to temperature, and thus, improve its performance. The main objective of this research is the addition of four different ratios of crumb rubber; 1, 2, 3, and 4%, of size 0.3 mm to bitumen or asphalt 60/70 grade. The results showed that penetration of the asphalt binder reduced from 66.70 to 59.20 mm at 4% rubber content, implying that the modified asphalt became harder with addition of crumb rubber and thus, can withstand temperatures variations in asphaltic pavements. Softening point, used to test temperature susceptibility of bitumen, increased from 49.10°C to 52.80°C at 4% crumb rubber content, implying that crumb rubber modified asphalt can withstand elevated temperatures in asphaltic pavements, in the tropics. Flashpoint increased from 295.20 to 296.12°C, fire point also increased from 306.50°C to 308.28°C, Specific gravity of the unmodified and crumb rubber-modified asphalt did not change significantly because crumb rubber is not very flammable, Viscosity at 135°C increased from 338.00 to 360.00 cSt at crumb rubber content of 4%, Ductility at 25°C reduced from 122.40 cm to 79.40 cm at 4% crumb rubber content, implying that crumb rubber made asphalt stiffer. This study concludes that crumb rubber can reduce the susceptibility of asphalt to temperature changes.
